This class is designed to introduce students to wheel throwing and to learn the basic techniques.

These consist of preparing the clay, centring, pulling up, shaping and trimming into a cylinder or bowl.

If you have previously taken a beginners course, the teacher will help you to refine and practice your skills and increase the amount of clay that you can work with.

If you feel ready to learn additional techniques such as adding handles or modifying forms these can be added to the program.

During the first 6 weeks you will be encouraged to visit the studio between classes for an independent practice session to firmly establish muscle memory so that each new skill comes easily. Centring takes about 30 hours of practice so putting the hours in really helps.

Week 1 & 2: Introduction to studio. Wedging and centring up to 500g of clay. After the 1st or 2nd lessons please try to fit in a practice session to build muscle memory. If you cannot come for the full 4 hours even 2 hours will really make a difference.

Week 3 & 4: Wedging and centring up to 500g of clay. Again please try to fit in a practice session between classes this will really consolidate the techniques.

Week 5 & 6: Forming, shaping and creating your design. Mastering intentional throwing.

Week 7 & 8: Finalizing, modifying and surface decoration. Glaze application and preparation of up to 10 pieces for the final firing.

Your pieces will be ready approximately 1 week after your last class.

* The Practice sessions can be  any day during Studio Hours
